10/6/2008  Sapphire Waveplates More Durable Than Quartz or Mica 
Highly durable, custom manufactured sapphire waveplates that are ideally suited for use in mission-critical visible and IR polarization control components are available from Meller Optics, Inc. of Providence, Rhode Island.

Meller Sapphire Waveplates feature 0.25 m to 4.7 m transmission, which is >98% when AR coated on both sides; with Moh 9 hardness and superior chemical resistance than quartz or mica. Custom manufactured in sizes from 10 mm to 30 mm in either A or M plane configurations, these sapphire waveplates are hard, durable and extend the wavelength beyond quartz or mica.

Providing λ/4 and λ/2 retardation with tolerance dependent on wavelength: 0.632 m >λ/300, 1.06 m λ/400, and 2.94 m >λ/1000, Meller Sapphire Waveplates exhibit transmitted wavefront of λ/10 @632 nm, 10-5 scratch-dig surface quality per MIL-O-13830A, and ≤1 arc/sec. parallelism.
