|12/22/2005||Sapphire Windows Unaffected by Caustic Fluids|
Custom sapphire windows that are unaffected by caustic fluids, second only to diamond in terms of hardness, and exhibit excellent optical properties are available from Meller Optics, Inc. of Providence, Rhode Island.
Meller Sapphire Windows are manufactured to specification in sizes ranging from ¼” to 10” dia. by ½ mm to 1” thick and provide a 270 nm to 4.7 µm range of transmission, with up to 85% transmission uncoated and up to 99% with A/R coatings on two sides. Impervious to chlorine and fluorine gas (to 300ºC) and most chemicals, they are second only to diamond in terms of hardness.
Featuring Moh 9 surface hardness, Meller Sapphire Windows can be manufactured with ±0.05 mm tolerance on thickness, flatness held to 0.5 fringes of HeNe, and parallelism from 20 to 2 arc/secs. Capable of withstanding pressures up to 10,000 psi and temperatures to 1,000°C, depending upon configuration, they can incorporate stepped edges for ease of assembly.
